Benefits That Nature Offers In Frail Care
At Midway Care we have observed the benefits of time spent outdoors and interacting with nature when it comes to the general health and wellbeing of our residents.
As stated in the article at: https://positivepsychology.com/positive-effects-of-nature
Nature Improves Psychological Well-Being
- Nature helps in emotional regulation and improves memory functions.
- Nature walks benefit people suffering from depression
- Recent investigations revealed that being outdoor reduces stress by lowering the stress hormone cortisol.
- Nature walks and other outdoor activities build attention and focus (Hartig, 1991).
- A study at the University of Kansas found that spending more time outdoors and less time with our electronic devices can increase our problem-solving skills and improve creative abilities.
Another interesting perspective as to the benefits of nature in frail care centres / nursing homes states the following (read full publication here):
“Residents’ perceptions of nature and the outdoor surroundings are characterised by good experiences and a reactivation of their own life history”.
Hence, amongst other benefits, interacting with nature can activate memories that may help to promote identity, self-worth and a positive self-perception for residents. Interacting with nature also provides a sense of change and freedom, while allowing for enjoyable social interaction and conversation.
