Communication techniques to assist Dementia / Alzheimer’s care
Realise your challenge: There will be good days and bad days
Be Patient: Tolerate compassionately any delays or provocation
Offer Reassurance: Listen attentively and show Empathy
Minimize Noise: Noise can disturb and confuse
Avoid Arguing: Do not contradict
Use Non-verbal cues: Gestures, Touch and Facial Expressions
Be Precise: Avoid pronouns such as “they, he or she”
Keep it simple: Make sure questions can be answered with a “Yes or No”
Be Sensitive: Don’t talk about them as if they were not present
Take a break: If you feel frustrated, take a break
Use FOCUSED Communication:
F – Face the person.
O – Orient the person to the topic.
C – Continue with the same topic.
U – Unstick by suggesting a word.
S – Structure questions so that choice can be recognized.
E – Exchange ideas in DAILY conversation.
D – Direct short, simple sentences.
